60’s Rock-n-Roll Fashions (Part 1)

 

 

 

 

Grace Slick certainly was not known for her flashy onstage outfits. It’s hard to find a lot of images and photos of her parading about in crazy and wild clothing. But when you see her she stands out as someone you’ll always remember, a unique silhouette. Her dark hair, in a world of blondes….she had a special appeal….that’s kind of hard to label. However if you look at her up bringing you might get a clue.

Classy, wasp, 1950’s family. Parents well educated, and her mother’s family goes back to the Mayflower.

Her early influences seem to be conservative, and clean-cut, boarding school, etc.

And as her musical success grew, her style stayed the same. A very simple ‘girl next door’ look. But don’t let that fool you; she was very wild and outrageous in every other part of her life.

She’s seen in her “Woodstock” performance in a white outfit, loose hanging pants and long blouse, both look to be fringed on the bottoms.

Known to have been very involved with LSD, and high much of the time, on and off stage. Her outward appearance was very normal…..not loud or flamboyant, but nice clothing with a touch of class.

She didn’t wear a lot of make-up, but some around the eyes.

Grace is now close to seventy, and she hasn’t performed her music in public for a very long time, partly because she feels old people shouldn’t be onstage playing rock and roll.

Most people don’t know that she is also an artist. She is known for her portraits of many rock icons like; Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, and others who she knew as friends.

One funny story that stands out is when she went to the White House to see President Nixon. Apparently her plan was to slip some LSD into his tea. I don’t think she succeeded, however if she did, maybe that’s why his career was cut short suddenly.
